This Saturday night, July 12th, Dog Gone and Bowery Presents join forces to bring you Seattle’s Rose Windows at Rough Trade in Brooklyn, NY. Local tripsters Worthless and High Waisted support while Drippy Eye Projections provides the visuals for this psychy gathering. Following their most excellent 2013 debut, The Sun Dogs, Rose Windows have a new 7″ out just last month on Sub Pop. We’ve got a signed copy of that new single, titled There Is A Light, along with a pair of tickets to giveaway to our friends. A few weeks back, at a strange little yard sale down the street from my apartment, I scored a compilation album curated by the once-popular New York disk jockey and concert promoter Murray the K. Featuring a selection of tracks by the bands he’d been playing on his show at the time, the comp includes songs by The Blues Project, Vanilla Fudge, The Shangri-Las, The Rascals and The Bee Gees, along with a pair of tunes by folky singer/songwriter Janis Ian. Thanks to ol’ Murray, I’ve been on a recent trip with Janis’ “Younger Generation Blues”—a rebellious, cigarette smokin’, anti-adult rocker of a tune.

Doggone sergeant, he rolled up in a hearse
And he called me a lousy, no good, juvenile pervert
He gave me a lecture on cancer of the lung
Said, anyone who smokes is a low-down dirty bum

Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, folks.

Ryley Walker put out one of the best releases of the year so far, folk or otherwise, with his “All Kinds of You” this past April. Coming out on the typically reissue-oriented Tompkins Square Records, it was obvious that his work was exceptional enough to pique their interest, and can sit among their many folk oriented reissues. Sounding like a product of his influences, his debut sways between the fingerpicking abilities of Michael Chapman’s “Fully Qualified Survivor”, the British Folk tendencies of Bert Jansch’s “Birthday Blues”, and the freewheeling live jazz-band dynamic of Tim Buckley’s “Lorca” in a way that is all his own. Throw Ryley’s world weary singing voice into the mix, and you have a very dynamic and creative album that is both of it’s time and out of it’s time. The man has done his homework.

Ryley will be appearing at the NXNE Death Hymn No. 9 Showcase on June 19 at The Smiling Buddha (961 College Street). Doors at 7:30 PM.

Widsith ∆ Maker of Song (1972)

A wise friend once hipped me onto the sounds of New Jersey hippy folk band Widsith and their back roads 1972 LP Maker of Song. It’s been a sunny day favorite ever since. A glance at the cover art shows a photo depicting two, very similar looking, long-haired mustached dudes leaning up against a dusty old barn with nothing else but a set of barrel staves and some mangy grass poking up from the bottom of the shot. While they say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, records certainly aren’t books. Here, the music you find within sounds like the cover looks. It’s like the photo was taken moments after they emerged from recording in that very barn. Mics crackle like they’re caked with an inch of dust; fluttery, telecasted guitar lines dance around each other Blind Faith style; tales of the road are sung out in a Dino Valenti-kinda-Van Morrison style drawl. Every song is a gem here, friends.

Long thought to be a lost treasure of the private press world, a few years back Alithia records shed a bit of light on the mystery LP with a lovely reissued version. I haven’t seen it around many places, but it’s out there. Seek one out for yourself.

Few bands possess a cosmic alignment as strong as that of MU, the early ’70s band led by West Coast psychedelic visionary Merrel Fankhauser and Captain Beefheart guitarist Jeff Cotton. Following the relative lack of commercial success with his ’60s projects, the cult-favorite Fapardokly and HMS Bounty, Fankhauser joined with Cotton and a series of players from the Mojave Desert scene and went on to form MU. Taking their name from cloud formations and mythology relating to the lost continent of Lemuria, the group remained true to the psychedelic experience by embarking upon extended “LSD meditations” to compose their songs.

After the release of their debut album in ’71, the members of MU continued to follow their spiritual callings and wound up moving to the Hawaiian island of Maui to explore UFO and extraterrestrial connections. They later purchased a banana and papaya plantation to finance their life on the island, where they continued to write songs and perform at local gigs for years after. When the group finally drifted apart, Fankhauser moved to the jungle where he lived for almost 14 years.

Merrell Fankhauser is performing at the The Hilton Garden Inn Ballroom in Palmdale California on July 17. What a long strange trip it has been, indeed.
