There’s no doubt about it, folks. A cold, snowy winter is upon us. If you’re like me and you read the Old Farmer’s Almanac, you would have seen this coming. They predicted the whole thing. As you are surely aware, heavy snowfalls call for plentiful jams and loads of hot soup. Perhaps a tea and a Victoria sandwich too.
Enjoy this month’s mix.

As many of you know, Dog Gone Presents moved headquarters from New York to Toronto earlier this year. Having been here for several months now, we’ve had a good amount of time to survey the local music scene and one of our greatest discoveries is a local psych rock band called Milk Lines.
Interestingly enough, it was actually in New York that we were first introduced to the band’s guitarist/vocalist Jeff Clarke, who was on tour with Acid Baby Jesus at the time leading his other Montreal-based group Hell Shovel (he also formerly played in Montreal’s Demonclaws). After that show, I was so impressed with Hell Shovel that I decided to reach out to try and connect when we both made it back to the other side of the border. When I finally got in touch with Jeff several months later, he told me to come check out a new band band he had formed now that he was living in Toronto. My first impression was that this band is good. Really good—like Toronto’s answer to White Fence. My second was that Jeff has monster hands that seem to claw at the guitar ala Neil Young. They’ve (the band, not the hands) got the garage-y rawness of Hell Shovel with the added female vocal edge of Emily Frances that recalls a less polished, slightly darker Quilt. Throw it all together with a bit of country twang and you have Milk Lines. Listen to their only recording, taped live at one of their recent shows, below.
Stay tuned for a Dog Gone Presents announcement bearing their name in the coming days!
Since forming in 2006, longtime friends Tommy Eisner and Linda Beecroft—together known as Golden Animals—have split time between their gritty Brooklyn abode and the sun-soaked lands of the California desert. Crafting songs that draw on inspirations from both of their homes—love, friendship, seclusion—they view their two bases as complementary influences, shaping their sound equally but very differently.
On September 24, Golden Animals will release their new album, Hear Eye Go, via The Reverberation Appreciation Society in conjunction with Burger Records. The album was recorded by Matt Boynton (MGMT, Kurt Vile) at Vacation Island Recordings, and by the band themselves at their own studio. Joe LaPorta (Foo Fighters, Beach House) mastered the album at The Lodge. Watch the video for “All Your Life” below.

The Night Beats embark on a Gonzo style journey down the West Coast in their latest video for “The Seven Poison Wonders.” The video finds them in the midst of an encounter with a hitchhiker who turns out to be a road-demon in disguise, presumably depicting their everyday life on the road. Directed by Brendhan Bowers, all footage was shot on 16mm colour negative film thru WA, OR, and CA state.
“The Seven Poison Wonders” comes off their excellent new album Sonic Bloom out September 24th via The Reverberation Appreciation Society and Burger Records. Preorder the album NOW. Night Beats play The Silver Dollar in Toronto on September 5, Brooklyn on November 9 and New York on November 12 (full list of dates below).
The video for “Back In The City,” the latest from LA psych juggernauts The Entrance Band, finds the group cast behind a veil of video-feedback as footage of their hometown races by as if to capture the rapid pace of city life. Taken from their new EP, Dans La Tempete, released last week on Spiritual Pajamas, “Back In The City” recalls the howling garage-rock of earlier Entrance releases, setting itself apart from the more spiritual, French-sung “Le Manque” and the transcendent instrumental “Mellow Fantastic.” While we’re unsure exactly where they’ve been all this time, it seems the city brings out a grittier side of The Entrance Band, and, for now, it’s a pleasure to have them back. Video directed by Brendan Burdzinski.
Purchase the limited 12″ vinyl and digital download of the Dans La Tempete EP via Spiritual Pajamas. Also be sure to read our recent interview with The Entrance Band’s Guy Blakeslee.

First conceived in the summer of 2008 as the home recording project of five childhood friends from Miami, Lil Daggers have risen from the bedroom to shared stages with Swans and more recently The Growlers and Royal Baths. Mining the well of reverb-laden, darker-edged psych, the band’s sound offers a stark contrast to the vibe of the sunny, beach-side city they call home. Following a series of 7”s, and an LP for limitedfanfare records, Lil Daggers have now teamed up with our pals at Beyond Beyond is Beyond for a new EP, No Pizza No Peace, to be released on cassette September 10. Listen to “After the Flood” and watch the video for “Jazz Tom” below.
